I've been a fan of Jeffery Deaver's Lincoln Rhyme novels for quite some time now. In this one, Deaver sends Lincoln and crime scene investigator Amelia Sachs into new territory: human smuggling.
The book begins with a group of Chinese people living in the hold of a ship called the Fuzhou Dragon. We get to know who they are ... and also about the smuggler, known to law enforcement as The Ghost. When the Coast Guard spots the Dragon and starts the interception process, The Ghost scuttles the ship.
Several of the people in the hold die, but two families get away. And The Ghost is looking for them.
As always Deaver lays out the clues in plain sight ... and as always, I am surprised at how they come together.
The biggest challenge with books like this is writing a review without giving away spoilers. Suffice it to say that fans of police procedurals will enjoy this book tremendously.
