A few years back, my husband and I saw a Rankin/Bass production called "The Story of Santa Claus." It was based on this book, by the author of "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz."Baum's story tells of Claus, a foundling in the Burzee forest. The forest is home to fairies and old gods who look after Claus and bring him up to love and respect all creatures. The book is a joy to read, with delightful prose and imagery that leans toward the pagan in many respects. I enjoyed it very much, and think that it is something that parents could share with their children by reading the book aloud during the holiday season.
