I love the Pendergast novels, but for some reason I had trouble following this one. I think it's because I did not read the two that immediately preceded it. As a result, I found myself re-listening to chapters to make sure I had the information I needed. The book starts off with the murder of Pendergast's wife, Helen ... who has, unbeknownst to the agent, given birth to his son. There is a subplot involving the daughter of an accused bank robber, and another involving Pendergast's aunt Cornelia and her claims to be more than 140 years old. The son, Tristram, is the source of another plot reminiscent of "The Boys from Brazil."All in all, it was a little confusing. However, I enjoyed Rene Auberjonois' narration so much that I gave this audio book four stars regardless of the bizarre plot line(s).
