Mr. Churchill's Secretary (Maggie Hope Series #1)

Mr. Churchill's Secretary - Susan Elia MacNeal Maggie Hope has gone to England to sell her late grandmother's house in order to pay for her graduate studies in mathematics at MIT. Unfortunately for her, WWII begins and she is unable to leave -- or to sell the house. So, she rents out the rooms to an interesting collection of women and goes to work in the Prime Minister's office as a typist. There's an opening because the previous job-holder has been murdered.Having hoped for a job as an encryptionist, Maggie is disappointed to say the least. However, she winds up working directly for Prime Minister Churchill. And then the challenges begin. It's hard to write a mystery review without delivering spoilers. Suffice it to say that there are things that Maggie doesn't even know about her own family that are revealed in the story, as well as watching a clever mystery unfold. The book is peopled with interesting original characters and historical personae, and is well-researched. The author provides a list of sources for readers who might wish to know more about some of the incidents she discusses. The world she creates is one of hope in the face of difficulty, and of facing unanticipated challenges.Highly recommended for fans of historical mysteries.(Review based on uncorrected advance proof.)
