"Remarkable Creatures" is the story of the early days of paleontology, as told through the eyes of Mary Anning and Elizabeth Philpot -- two women whose finds are housed in the Museum of Natural History (in London) among other locations. Oftentimes, their finds (including Anning's discovery of the first known ichthyosaurus and plesiosaurus) were credited to men who bought the fossils from them.The book is also an examination of life for women in the Regency era, as behavior was proscribed for them in ways that it was not for men.Entertaining and well-researched.
