Tarzan of the Apes

Tarzan of the Apes - Michael Meyer, Gore Vidal, Edgar Rice Burroughs I had never read any of Burroughs' Tarzan novels while growing up, and decided that now was a good time to rectify the oversight.Tarzan of the Apes introduces us to the unknowing Lord Greystoke and details his childhood and youth in Africa. Tarzan teaches himself to read using primers he finds in his deceased parents' cabin, although he does not know how to pronounce the words. He also learns how to write in block letters from the primers, which become useful to him when Jane Porter and her party are brought to the African coast by pirates.I suspect that most people know the story of Tarzan fairly well, but may not have read this well-written and entertaining series. The book ends with a cliffhanger, so I am compelled to read the second in the series as well.
